SYDNEY HOST LIONS CLUB RUNS A SUCCESSFUL BBQ TO SUPPORT THE CITY OF SYDNEY FREE TREE GIVE AWAY DAY ON 30 MARCH 2019
Congratulations to the Sydney Host Lions Club BBQ team who worked so hard to make the City Of Sydney Free Tree Give-a-way BBQ such a great success. We cooked and distributed around 400 sausage sandwiches. The queue of people lining up for free trees (and our BBQ) stretched down the street and continued all the way along a pathway to the sports oval about 100 metres away.
Many thanks to our BBQ team consisting of Lions David Pell, Cate Turner, John Cordato (Chief Cook), Elsie Carter, John Newton, Karin Cheung (Zone Chair), Paul Lechowski and David Carter. Our new heavy-duty marquee was a great success and kept our food supplies and all of us dry as the rain came down during the early part of the day. Thanks also to the team from the City of Sydney who helped set up/pack up our marquee and our other equipment.
The cost of all the food and condiments was paid by the City of Sydney and they also paid our Lions Club a fee of $750.00 for running the BBQ. The food was given away free, but customers were invited to make a voluntary donation to Lions that was an extraordinary sum of $490.45! Our total net “profit” on the day was $1338.05.
Our Lions’ service is not limited to financial support as we helped the City Of Sydney distribute thousands of plants and trees that will have a positive impact on our environment for years to come.
Here is some information provided by the City Of Sydney on the benefits of improving Sydney’s green canopy:
“Trees make our city cooler, improve air quality and provide more habitat for birds and animals. They also improve health and wellbeing, providing a calmer and safer environment.
The City of Sydney has planted over 13,000 trees since 2005 – we already have around 44,000 trees on our streets, parks and City properties – and we are planning for many more.
Our yearly free tree giveaway encourages residents to help us reach our target to increase the urban canopy up to 50% by 2030”
